Dennis O'Neil M. D., age 54, died peacefully January 4, 2014 at Hospice House of Rutherford County. He was surrounded by his family and held in love.

Dennis was a devoted husband, involved father, caring doctor, and witty guy. Originally from Waterford, MI, Dennis met his loving wife Vicki (Webre) O'Neil in Lafayette, LA while attending USL and working as a commercial diver prior to attending medical school at LSU. Their five children were born between Dennis's last year in college and the first year of his residency in Temple, TX. The family moved to Rutherfordton in 1998 when Dennis joined Spindale Family Practice. In 2011 the O'Neils moved to Stratford, New Zealand where Dennis accepted a 1-year assignment with Avon Medical Center. It was there he was diagnosed with colon cancer, which ultimately took his life.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Vicki, his children Elizabeth (22), David (21), Claire (19), Catherine and Theresa (both 18), brothers Tim (Westland, MI) and Joe (Edgewater, FL), his sisters Meg Tripoli (Margate, FL) and AnnE (Hillsdale, NY.), and a whole community of loving friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church of Rutherfordton with Reverend Dr. Jack Knoespel and Reverend Dr. Don Scofield officiating. The visitation will follow the service in the Fellowship Center. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County; P.O. Box 336; Forest City, N.C. 28043 would be appreciated.
